Now usually I honestly don't rate local hip hop/rap/pop tracks simply because most of it be garbage and bunch of egos on a beat fueled by their friends lack of ability to tell them the truth but I heard this track today & I might be late hearing this cause I don't listen to radio etc but this track right here has some appeal & even I will admit that. It's catchy, the hook is remember-able, the lyrics & beat go together, it sounds current & most importantly it doesn't sound like sum trini bwoys trying to do fresh water yankee hip hop. Thumbs up on this Chromatics, Axis & Levell..BLAST IT!

SLiM PiCKENS(Kastro to those who know him well), Kyvah Johnston, was Born in the Roxbury section of Boston. His style is based on Hip Hop roots, socially conscious what is consider underground. He has had air play on several college radio stations and has featured on some local mainstream stations as well. Aside from radio he has also received recognition from the internet as an electrifying MC on the rise and is nominated for NMS "Artist On the Verge" project. SLiM has been a featured artist on sites such as Disdain.tv, Rapstation.com, LOUD.com, OURSTAGE.com, and AOL's The BoomBox to name a few.

SLiM PiCKENS has become a well respected performer around the New England and NY areas performing at venues like Harper's Ferry, The Western Front, Kay's Oasis, Mc Gann's, The Middle East, Ecko Lounge, Jerkys, Lupos HeartBreak, The Beach House, The Pyramid, SOB's. I got an email recently about this artist - Gretchen Elise out of Philadelphia, a singer-songwriter whose music had me captivated from the start, note I was in the kitchen cooking at the time and ended up having it playing through out the house lol. Flirting with reggae, soul, hip hop and dance music while grounded in her jazz-based passionate, fluid voice, her songs tell compelling stories guided by undivided attention to a good groove. Time & Space (BMI / 2010), sophomore release of Philly singer-songwriter Gretchen Elise, opens with a smooth neo-soul intro and jumps to a rolicking call-and-response party track with caribbean and old-school hip hop flavor, horn riffs by Camden’s UCC Royal Brass Band, and a tongue-in-cheek story about a racial issue at Boston’s Caribbean Carnival. Gretchen’ s Brazilian jazz-flavored vocal melodies, craftful vocal harmonies, and unexpected collaborations tell compelling stories guided by undivided attention to a good groove.

Gretchen’s fruitful collaboration with producer/engineer Paul Atkinson on all 11 album tracks further expands the catchy songwriting style of her first, more jazz-based CD Are You Ready (BMI/2004) into realms informed by European-flavored electronica and deep, soulful house. Eclectic, yet accessible production by Paul Atkinson (Aurum Recording) on Time & Space is grounded by Philadelphia jazz bassist Jonathan Michel, soul-jazz keyboardist Anam Owili-Eger and multi-instrumentalist Clay Sears, and the Camden urban soul brass ensemble Unity Community Center’s Royal Brass Band, along with Boston-based musicians and guest artists Walnut (hip hop poet) and Lady Lee (reggae singer).

Gretchen Elise on Time & Space songs

1. Work Hard--(Jazz-Neo-Soul) I wrote this in grad school. I was supposed to be writing a paper on the Montgomery Bus Boycott. I kept writing lines to this neo-soul song with multiple harmonies that was about all the people that work hard to create change in society. I realized through this process that my mind had fundamentally changed over the last years. I used to be an analytical thinker. Now I process things better through song, through music.

2. What’s Wrong with this Picture (Jazz-Funk/Soca) is a call-and-reponse old school hip hop story song actually borrowed the groove from Jurassic Five’s “Concrete and Clay”. I added a Caribbean soca vibe to the verse. This is a funny song about a serious issue--getting special valet service from some cops when a couple other (white) friends and I were looking for a bus stop after Caribbean Carnival in Boston. The hook -- “What’s wrong with this picture?” “Somethin ain’t right!” became kind of an anthem in the conscious hip hop & R&B scene there. The audience always takes on these parts eagerly. This recording has an amazing horn section, Camden’s UCC Royal Brass--soon after I moved back to Philly I heard these guys (& girls), aged 11 to 34 and became fixated on collaborating with them on this tune. They also add their voices to the party vibe of the hook.

3. Time & Space I (Blues-Breakbeat)- This came out of a drum jam with a few friends on a riverbank one afternoon. It’s a slow breakbeat groove, kind of trippy, with lots of space for vocal effects. “Time & Space/ Human race/ We’ve got to face/ Long way to go” -- this is about how I feel about us as humans. But we better have fun while we’re getting ourselves down the long road to a better place.

4. Don’t Fit (Jazz/pop)-- I wrote this song after a bad job interview. It’s about being misjudged and how it’s comfortable--makes you feel like your jacket “don’t fit.” This is maybe the jazziest tune on the cd, catchy and compact.

5. One + One (Nu-jazz)-- This is kind of an ambient, minor key, atmospheric track with interesting vocal layers and a pretty clear hook: One plus one is two/Two plus two is four/But if you don’t got one/They won’t let you in the door. Walnut adds some lyrical perspective to this topic in hip hop poetic style.

6. Wonderland (Brazilian jazz/eclectic)- This is a song about just falling in love. Very clear 1970’s brazilian jazz vibe with some funk backbeat to the samba bridge, nice. Paul Atkinson (producer) got into the Wonderland theme and tripped out the bridge section with some Indian zitar & effects like a good Alice on shrooms.

7. Pickin Up - (Neo-Soul)This is about picking myself up after a big disappointment. This is a bluesy, neo soul vibe song with great 3- part gospel-inspired vocal harmonies that switch from front to back, so the tune is very alive.

8. Time & Space II (Jazz-Deep House)- this is the deep soulful house version of the Time and Space jam, that emerged with a bunch of house heads jammin’ with some drums on a riverbank in Cambridge, MA. This tune will get any ol’ heads dancin and some new ones up too. Fantastic horn riffs from UCC Royal Brass Band and tenor sax from Nasir Dickerson.

9. Finally- (Soul/pop) This hook is borrowed from CC peniston’s 80’s dance hit, but in this fun, dramatic tune it’s kind of ironic. This is a true story of when I met someone I was very excited about and on the first date I discovered he was, oops, married. This track features a great rap section from boston-based hip hop poet Walnut. The tune is like 80’s dance pop meets Calypso.

10. Love Souldier (Roots Reggae/Jazz) --This is a roots reggae inspired song, blessed also by Lady Lee, reggae singer and selectress from Barbados and Boston, MA. It’s really about the love, true love of a good man, but if you listen close it’s also a peace anthem. Case in point-- Lady Lee references Garnett Silk’s “Onward Christian Soldiers” in her lyrics.

11. Blue Light (Nu-Jazz)-- this was a jazz melody I wrote in the snow in Vermont, inspired by nature. In production with Paul Atkinson its character evolved, it’s got a lot of ambient European dance groove in it, kind of a Bjork-ish from the city vibe, and some sound art rounding it out.

Fish, as well as Hezekiah too. Nothing but heat start to finish and that's exactly what Keziah does on her self-titled EP so you already know what to expect.

Keziah is the younger sister of hip hop artist Hezekiah and the skillz definitely runs in the family. You'll find her on all of Hezekiah's projects and now she is taking a leap out on her own venture, just in time to fill the void of seasoned female emcees.

The phrase “you cant get where you’re going without knowing where you’ve been” may as well be Vikter Duplaix’s creed. A native Philadelphian, musical historian/tastemaker/DJ and cultural influencer all at once, he has spread his wings to Los Angeles but he carries the eclectic spirit of our city with him at all times. He was gracious enough to speak at length about getting his start as a DJ, his musical legacy and the cultural and philosophical differences between Philly and L.A.

You originally built your career up in Philly before finally moving to L.A. What caused the move?
My original goal was to be bi-coastal. Before the economy crashed, I maintained a home in Philly and tried to get back to it at least one week per month. I underestimated exactly what it would take financially and mentally to do it. I eventually felt stuck in some type of social limbo. That scenario combined with frequent and long international trips left me completely exhausted and negatively effected my productivity and creativity. The choice to stay more in L.A. was primarily made from an entertainment business perspective. I wanted to grow as an artist and creative entity. I wanted to come in contact with a larger base of my creative peers. I wanted to learn from and measure my self against the best of the best on a daily basis. I needed a passion check. I knew I hadn't reached my full potential and I felt the comfort of home would never force me to. Seeing the world has taught me that Philly is a unique place. I define myself as a member of the great Philadelphia tribe. But us Philly folks have a bad tendency of not leaving to experience other spaces and places to the fullest. It's almost as if we think we'll be seen as traitors to our own family and bloodlines by venturing outward. That mentality keeps people living in West Mt. Airy from ever seeing 58th and Baltimore and Art Museum dwellers saying Main Street in Manayunk is too far to go for dinner. I can call it because I've done it. Ultimately, I needed to expand. L.A. probably won't be my last stop. I've got my eyes on a few continents right now. But nobody will ever be able to take me and Philly away from each other.

SMIRNOFF Vodka is launching a new reality television show, Master of the Mix. In a quest to crown the hottest DJ in the world, Master of the Mix is hosting multiple DJs in cities throughout the world to determine the ultimate mix master. Hosted by Grammy nominated producer/DJ, Just Blaze, and world famous DJ, Kid Capri, the show will pit the world's most prominent DJs against each other in head-to-head competition. The show will air Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. ET beginning 11/3 on Centric, a 24-hour music and entertainment channel aimed at the African American audience. The show re-airs on Saturday nights at midnight ET on BET.

The competition kicks off at the DJ's base camp for the show, a luxurious home in the Hollywood Hills, and quickly moves to Sin City where the DJs spin at The People's Challenge, a massive vodka tasting event for SMIRNOFF at Tao Nightclub in Las Vegas. From there, the show follows the DJ's from city to city – and party to party – including Miami, Los Angeles, New York and London, where contestants will put their skills to the test in a series of challenges.

Judged on their technical ability, track selection, originality, and crowd response, DJ's will be competing for the title of Master of the Mix, as well as $250,000 in cash and prizes, including a personalized SMIRNOFF bottle. Kid Capri, who deejayed for Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam and has produced sessions for Heavy D, Boogie Down Productions, and Quincy Jones, will anchor the judging booth, while notable industry vets such as Biz Markie will make guest appearances throughout the season.

When Germantown native Bilal Oliver released 1st Born Second in 2001, the future looked golden. He had a fanciful falsetto voice, swerving, soulful melodies and Interscope's major-label backing.

Things changed with 2006's Love for Sale. The album was free, open-ended, frenetic — far adrift from the neo-soul wave he came in on. "I was fighting the whole time I was making that record, with the label, as I was writing lyrics in the studio," says Bilal, who lives in Harlem these days but returned to Philly for a show last week. "I had the session cats telling me my songs were weird and that nobody's going to like this. I had to literally stop tape and throw those guys out of the studio." He's laughing as he remembers. Interscope had signed Oliver for a certain sound and, in his estimation, didn't expect or want him to grow into the free-jazzy guitar-slinger he had, in actuality, always been.

Entrepreneur Spotlight: Rahsaan aka The Fly Guy: From Rapping About Sneakers to His Own Sneaker Store

Within the last year I came across a mixtape named Fly Paper done by Rahsaan. Little did I know this was just a little of what he had to offer. If you check his My Space page ( http://www.myspace.com/rahsaan1 ) you'll see the dude has been getting some press. He's a Rap artist, Dj and Entrepreneur...Come on I can't be the only person recognizing the elements of Hip Hop right there. This alone sets him to be in my next Entrepreneur Spotlight peep this interview below with what he did with NEW TIMES in MIAMI

Rahsaan "A Fly Guy" Alexander -- better known simply as Rahsaan -- must be one of Miami's hardest-working individuals.

The MC released his new album, Georgetown, earlier this year (get it now on iTunes.) But overall, saying that Rahsaan is "driven" is a real understatement. When he's not in the studio working on music, or doing shows, you can find him DJing at different hotspots around South Florida. And when he's not doing any of that, you might also be able to find him behind the counter at his sneaker boutique, Stock X Change, in Hollywood.

This week is big for him and the store: It marks Stock X Change's one-year anniversary. To celebrate, there's a week-long sale offering 50 percent off everything in the store, as well as a kick-ass anniversary party at the Clevelander Hotel on South Beach this Saturday, July 3, starting at 11 p.m.

Crossfade caught up with Rahsaan to talk about music and the sneaker business. Read the Q&A after the jump.

For those who don't know, describe who "Rahsaan" is.

Someone once described me as "the articulate voice of Generation Y." Rahsaan is a father, a son, a brother, an MC (by nature), a DJ (by trade), a designer, sneaker store owner, and the list continues. I guess those are the general things about me, but deep down, I'm just a man trying to continue growing and learning about myself, and the world.

How has the response been for the new album?

The general public has been responding well to the album. It got 3.5 out of 5 stars on HipHopDX.com, which is not bad for an unheard independent project. I think some people are shocked at some of the content on it. I've never been one to open up to people about my personal life. I'm very guarded, but when I'm on the mic, or in the booth, I'm an open book. It's easier that way, because a beat or piece of music, can't judge you when you talk/rap over it. It just has to take what I give it.

People are full of opinions so it's harder for me to confide in them. I got the "indie spotlight" on iTunes and also peeked atnumber three in the hip-hop section on day three of the release, behind Drake and Young Jeezy. Georgetown is a very honest look into my life thus far. And I will always believe that truth resonates more with the people.

Definitely. What else is next for you on the music side of things?

As far as music goes, I'm getting ready to shoot a video for my next single, "Think About You." It's a record about my divorce that I went through a few years back and also about how even when we move on, or attempt to, sometimes our exes stay on our minds. It features a really dope singer from Virginia named Joe Tann. Hopefully after that, I'd like to hit the road and start doing shows. Have you ever seen me perform live? It's quite a sight.

What's your best hip-hop memory?

My best hip-hop memory so far is of me performing in Chicago before a crowd of 20,000 people with Ghostface and Raekwon, and people looking at me and cheering. You can't buy that type of euphoria.

Ironically you have a song called "Sneaker Store Terrorist" and shortly after you released it, you opened Stock X Change in Hollywood. How's the last year in business been? What have you learned and experienced?

Since I recorded the song a couple of years ago, I thought how incredible it would be to actually own my own sneaker store one day. I didn't know how I was going to do it, but once I set my mind to something, those close to me know, I execute.

I was managing a sneaker boutique in Aventura Mall last year, and one day I told myself it was time to do it on my own. So, I learned what I needed to learn and left to open Stock X Change. There's so much that goes into owning your own retail business. People think I just get inventory and sell it, and make a lot of money. But it's a lot more than that on the back end. The taxes, the brand accounts, the trade shows, the consignment deals with local brands, fixed and variable expenses, the competition.

Some people said I was insane for starting a business in the midst of a recession. I saw it as a challenge. And now that I'm celebrating one year of business on July 3, I have to say, I am blessed. Despite great sales one month, then not so good sales the next, nothing compares to the fulfillment of being your own boss.

And you're throwing an anniversary party, correct?

Yes, I'm throwing an anniversary party this Saturday, July 3 at the 1020 Music Boxx, on the second floor of the Clevelander Hotel. Doors open at 11 p.m. It's the seventh installment of these monthly themed parties I do called Fashion Monster™. The theme for this month is "the Sneaker Freaker" where I'll be giving away free sneakers and other items from my store just to show appreciation for all the support South Florida has been giving me this past year. What do you feel has been the most important thing you've done in order to keep your store successful?

There isn't just one thing you can do to keep a business successful. At least, not in retail. There are so many factors when you're dealing with supply & demand. But dedication is the key to succeeding in anything. Even when things seem at their worst, that's when you have to show the most gumption and determination. There have been times over the past year when I questioned if I made the right decision, leaving a steady paycheck and stepping into uncertain territory, but I'm a man of optimism and faith.

The founding ideal behind LexZyne Productions, is that we make music that WE like to listen to. Our passion for music was birthed in the 70’s era of Soul and R&B, and eventually progressed to hip-hop where it has since, had a firm hold. As our love for music has grown and been nurtured by the evolution of Hip-Hop, we are ‘those hip-hop heads’ that do draw a thin line between what we define as ‘REAL’ hip-hop and from what the younger generation may label as ‘REAL’.

From our passion, and in our effort to preserve the kind of timeless music that we grew up on, we do sample heavily and feel that part of the art of ‘sampling’, is finding the right sample in order to preserve and promote a specific feeling.
We start our creative process by taking one sample and each making a separate beat with it, then collaboratively, we go back to the drawing board to critique each track, while offering both versions as “available for use”. Although we do sample mostly Soul, we do not limit ourselves, or our creativity, to the genre. Even with the talent, skills and ability to create non-sampled beats, we find that they are not as much fun to create as when we are able to incorporate and reinvent some of the timeless classics into a feel or sound that still reaches the younger generations.

At LexZyne Productions, we never stop working.. and although we like the constant GRIND of the music-business, our insatiable LOVE for the culture is too strong to allow us to get lost in the money or compromise our passion for a price-tag.

Here’s the video for the track She Was Fly, a production from Amsterdam’s Full Crate and singer Mar. You might actually have seen this before, it has been floating around for about half a year already.

Traum Diggs captures the essence of a forgotten era on his second installment of The Throwback Series.
